Dear IBPO families,
I hope your students have gotten off to a great start this year here at Woodrow. Due to your support and involvement, the IBPO has hosted our freshmen get together in August, a freshman breakfast in September and hosted our first meeting of the year on Wednesday October 24 with a panel discussion on the ACT and SAT tests. We had a wonderful turn out for this event despite the weather. I hope you all learned as much as I did to help your child plan for college applications in the future.
Keep visiting our website for news, upcoming events for the other classes, and opportunities to volunteer for the rest of the year.
I continue to thank you for your support of this organization and our school.
IBPO Parent Social
We had a full house at the October 24 IBPO Speaker Series, ACT or SAT - Which one should my child take? More than 80 IB parents and community members gathered at Times Ten Cellars for an informative session on standardized testing. Topics included a discussion of the ACT vs. the SAT, when to start preparing and how many times a student should take the exams.
Speakers were Mindy O'Connell and Thomas Urquidez. Mindy is an IB teacher at Woodrow Wilson who specializes in ACT test preparation. Tom is on the Board of Directors of Academic Success Programs – Dallas and has been preparing students for the SAT for 20 years. Many thanks go to IB Coordinator Dr. Kellie Ritchie for moderating the panel discussion. Many, many thanks go to Stacy Huebner and Jennifer Woods for producing the Speaker Series Events. You made it look effortless.
IB Class News
Freshman (Class of 2022): The class of 2022 is off to a great start in their first year of high school at Woodrow and their first semester of IB. They were treated to a wonderful breakfast put on by the IBPO the last week in September. Thank you parents for making this event happen for the freshman. They have completed the first two six-week sessions and are starting to get the rhythm of IB high school life. Most teachers have lots of tutoring hours available if your student needs some extra help with any classes. The freshman have all just enjoyed their first Woodrow Wilson Homecoming as well. Great times were had and memories were made!
Sophomore (Class of 2021): Sophomores (and some Freshman) took the PSAT on October 10 and can look forward to receiving results by December 3, 2018. Results include your student's score, their strengths and weaknesses. A trip to Kahn Academy online can give your student additional practice in weaker areas. Taking the test as a sophomore is great preparation for the test next year, when a great PSAT Score as a high school junior can qualify a student for National Merit Scholarships.
Junior (Class of 2020): This semester the juniors began the IB Programme in earnest. All the students have now chosen the topic for their first Internal Assessment (IA) in History. In January they will begin the process of choosing the topic for their EE. And of course Junior year is a great time to take the SAT and ACT.
Senior (Class of 2019): This is an exciting and extremely busy time for our seniors! They are close to finishing and turning in their Extended Essays and CAS projects this semester and preparing for their upcoming Internal and External Assessments in their classes. Fall college application deadlines are fast approaching, too, so they are currently immersed in getting these completed and submitted in addition to keeping up with their weekly coursework and extra curricular activities. Woodrow's special Senior class activities will begin soon, filling the calendar with lots of special events to make this year especially memorable for them as we count down to graduation day in May.
IBPO provides refreshments to teacher meetings each six weeks. Refreshments were organized for our IB Teachers' planning meeting in August before school started to kick off the year. Upcoming teacher appreciation projects planned are:
Parents are needed throughout the year to contribute and coordinate teacher appreciation and student events.
Our next event is for the seniors on December 3 to celebrate them completing their final Extended Essays. We observe this amazing achievement each year by organizing an ice cream social during all lunch periods.
All volunteers need to be approved through the Voly link on the IBPO website. Please contact Carrie Fisketjon, our IBPO volunteer coordinator if you have any questions.
IBPO Membership Renewals
If you have not done so already, please RENEW your IBPO Membership! Your IBPO Membership needs to be renewed EACH YEAR to ensure our annual budgeted costs are covered.
Please support your child’s exceptional IB Education and consider what contribution you are able to make when choosing your IBPO Membership level. IBPO bridges the gap from parent contributions to enrich Woodrow’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Program for our students and staff. Your IBPO funds are used to underwrite annual student events (freshman breakfast, sophomore DP luncheon, junior extended essay writing workshops, senior essay celebration, senior send-off), IB staff appreciation and needs, parent informational guest speaker series, freshman summer social and the IBPO website. Without generous contributions from our IBPO members, this program as it is would not be possible.
